Nipples

Ideally Breast feed is the best and most suitable for a baby. But breast-feeding may not be possible or preferable for all women. As first time parents, you will be facing so many decisions in caring for your baby.

You can choose latex, silicone, or rubber nipples. Latex nipples are softer and more flexible, but they don't last as long. Silicone nipples are firmer and hold their shape longer. Whichever type you may chose but the only thing that has to be kept in mind is that Nipples have to be washed and sterilized properly before every use.

You have a choice in nipple shape, too — traditional, orthodontic, or flat-topped nipples. Nipples are also available in a range of sizes and flow speeds. Nipples are categorized by flow rates. They are available in slow, medium and fast flow rates. Nipple choice depends on many factors such as, the age of your child, special needs, does the baby also breastfeed, and any other factors that are important to you like the type of material. As your baby gets older, buy nipples with larger holes.
When to replace nipples ? Formula should drip steadily out of a nipple. If it pours out in a stream, the hole is too big and the nipple should be replaced. Check nipples periodically for signs of wear, such as discoloration or thinning, and replace worn ones, which could break and become a choking hazard.
